I am cooking lamb for the first time. I opened the package and the smell is sickening. should I be concerned?
I know about when in doubt throw it out but I just wanted to get advise before trashing this cut of meat.
It depends on how long you’ve had it. I’m not sure what lamb is suposed to smell like, but if it makes me gag, I’m gonna throw it out!

If it’s still before the expiration date, DON’T THROW OUT the meat! Take it back to the store for a refund!

I hear that lamb is a gamey tasting meat so that’s probably a normal smell.

I agree with the person who said take it back, definitely take it back to the store for a refund. If it smell sickening then it will probably make you sick. Take it back.

If the tag says the meat isn’t expired, AND you have properly refrigerated the lamb, then it could be the normal smell of raw lamb. I have cooked it for years, and it has a strong gamey smell, but it should be fine and should smell differently when fully cooked [provided the above issues are okay]. It also has a light gamey taste-it will be different from the beef you normally eat…

if you have just purchased it, then take it back and ask for a refund. lamb is a bit on the gamey side but it should not be sickening to smell and you are correct on the saying.

Points to consider: You have stored the lamb correctly in a fridge. It hasn’t been contaminated with other foods. It is raw.
If your fridge operates between 0 and 5 degrees, then the meat has been properly kept. If its a raw product, then the lamb should keep in this environment- properly covered/wrapped for up to 3 days.
If its cooked and you are reheating it in some way take it back to the shop immediately for a full refund. Any cooked product should not have any ‘sickening smell’ and is clearly off.
However the raw product does give off a light odour of ‘gameness’ and will probably be off putting if you have never used it before.
Rinse the meat under clean water. This takes the blood away if its been sitting in a vac pac. Pat it dry, this should reduce the smell and is nothing to worry about.
A great tip is to marinade your lamb in some garlic, olive oil and rosemary- all perfect bedfellows.
If the lamb has been hanging around for too long, more then 3 days or your fridge isn’t up to scratch, don’t take any chances and bin it.
